CT Burgos designs a 5-year Strategic Plan to continue responding to logistical potential.

Juan Carlos Martín de Pedro has been the new General Director of the Centro de Transportes de Burgos since mid-year. In this role, he has set the objective of designing a five-year Strategic Plan to continue responding to the logistical potential of CT Burgos’ area of influence.

Currently, the Centro de Transportes de Burgos has three main business areas, where its new General Director, Juan Carlos Martín de Pedro, aims to focus its activity.

Regarding, firstly, the activity of renting warehouses, premises, and offices, 99% of the CT Burgos space is currently leased. This represents more than 300,000 square meters of logistics space with “great customer loyalty,” says Martín de Pedro. He emphasizes the commitment to technological improvements in the facilities and investment in automation and more modern and sustainable features, such as LED lighting.

The parking lot will be certified as a secure and protected parking facility.

Regarding the heavy vehicle parking, it has a capacity for 360 vehicles and is operating at full capacity, especially on weekends. In this area, the goal is, according to Martín de Pedro, “to develop the analyses already commissioned to certify the facility as a ‘secure and protected parking and storage area’,” in compliance with current regulations and adding significant value to road transport activities. CT Burgos will define the necessary investment to achieve this certification.

As the third area of activity, CT Burgos also operates its own logistics services in a 12,000-square-meter warehouse at the Transport Centre, with activities including reception, storage, and distribution of goods. In this aspect, Martín de Pedro is committed to investing in automation, process standardization, and the modernization of logistics activities.

Expansion

In parallel to the development of these projects in the already established activity zones, CT Burgos is still in the process of finalizing its expansion, the urbanization of which was inaugurated in March 2023. However, the commercialization phase has not yet been undertaken.

According to Juan Carlos Martín de Pedro, “We are still waiting for Iberdrola to finalize the electrical connection. We are confident that this will be materialized before the end of the year, which will facilitate the commercialization.”

The electrical connection for the expansion is expected to be finalized before the end of the year.

The plan is initially to develop a large, compartmentalized, and modular distribution facility that allows for multiple developments and meets the demand, which ranges from 3,000 to 10,000 square meters.

Nevertheless, Martín de Pedro confirms that CT Burgos has commissioned a feasibility study to understand the real demand for logistics facilities in the Burgos area and to determine the needs of businesses in order to define the facilities for the expansion.

Plan

Against this backdrop, Juan Carlos Martín de Pedro has set as his goal at the beginning of his leadership of the Centro de Transportes de Burgos the development of a Strategic Plan for 2025-2030. This plan, looking ahead five years, will be supported by seven strategic pillars: financial-economic, aligned with the center’s activities; sustainability, applying measures for savings and optimization; organizational climate and culture, with projects for employee loyalty and facility maintenance; continuous improvement and digitalization projects, with AI as a tool; commercialization and marketing, with the development of social media and website renewal; distribution and logistics, with the aforementioned investment in automation and process improvement; and, finally, the study to address the development of strategic investments.

“Villafría must manage to balance import-export rail traffic to overcome its current stagnation.”

One of the key projects managed by CT Burgos is the Villafría Intermodal Terminal, which is currently going through a phase of “stagnation,” as stated by Juan Carlos Martín de Pedro, the General Director of CT Burgos.

At present, the terminal only has a weekly service from Bilbao, as well as a weekly tanker train from Huelva, explains Martín de Pedro, who confirms that recent projects with Barcelona and Valencia have not been consolidated.

According to Martín de Pedro, “There is a lot of interest in the area to boost rail transport and take advantage of its competitive advantages, but we have not been able to secure commitments on traffic that would help consolidate the services.”

“At a minimum, Villafría has the market capacity to accommodate two more trains per week, and I am convinced of its great potential. However, it is necessary to continue seeking ways to aggregate goods and bring together the interested parties,” says the General Director of CT Burgos, who adds, “Villafría must manage to balance import-export rail traffic to overcome its current stagnation.”

One of the infrastructure improvement projects for the terminal is the extension of the two dispatch tracks from 409 and 449 meters to 579 and 573 meters, respectively. According to Martín de Pedro, Adif is progressing very slowly in the study and implementation of this project.
